What your mom told you might have been fine for how dating was back then, after all men expected women to stay home, tend to the house and care for the kids.  They were to be silent and never give their opinions.  As a matter of fact they were believed to have no opinions of their own.  They simply went along with whatever he said.

But men today don’t want a woman who is mousy and without a single complete thought of her own.  He wants her to be independent and smart.  She should have her own life, her own career and hobbies that will keep him busy and stimulated.

They also have a desire to be with a woman who is strong and strong willed.  This said, you still want to beware of overpowering the guy.  If you come on too strong, so strong that you leave him feeling weak, you might push him away.

Keep a fair balance of strength and independence with softness and vulnerability.  While he wants you to be strong, somewhere in there he’ll ultimately want to be the man in the couple.

Another aspect women may have taken too far is their sexual freedom.  While it’s great to have the freedom to do as you wish, many women have taken to using their sexuality to get the attention of a good man who’ll want a true and loving relationship.

Unfortunately, the view of a woman who is too easy with her sexuality hasn’t really changed all that much over the years.  She will still be viewed in a rather negative light.  Few men who are looking for the love of their life want to become involved with a woman who gives it up so easily.
